Renata,"Continental’Drift’0’puttingPangaea’back’together"! What I did: First I showed a movie that explains how fossils form, and explained that fossils are only found in sedimentary rocks. I showed two types of rocks, a sandstone with wave ripples and a pahoehoe lava, and the students figured out which one was a sedimentary rock. Finally, the shapes of the continents can reinforce the idea of continental drift. Have students arrange the continents on a surface, using the globe to place the shapes in their relative positions. Ask them to try to move the continents together, as if they were moving the pieces in a large jigsaw puzzle until they find the best fit.

Dec 06, 2020 · The continental drift theory is the theory that once all the continents were joined in a super-continent, which scientists call Pangaea. Over a vast period of time, the continents drifted apart to their current locations. Alfred Wegener first supported continental drift. Formation of Earth's continents from Pangaea to current day. Context: This activity allows discussion of ‘continental drift’ theory, which is now regarded as part of the overarching theory of plate tectonics. It provides a useful introduction to more technical aspects of the theory and can be used at all levels of pupils’ attainment.
shoreline. These sea-covered borders are known as CONTINENTAL SHELVES . The margins of the continental shelves mark the true edges of the continents. Heavy parts of the crust sank down and lighter parts raised up not only due to the pressure of contraction but also due to isostatic adjustments. The interior of the Earth was thought to be a viscous fluid that could accommodate this sinking and rising.
Included is a puzzle activity on plate tectonics. Students will be coloring, cutting, and gluing puzzle pieces according to their plate boundaries. The boundaries include divergent (continental and oceanic lithosphere), convergent (continental, oceanic, and continental/oceanic lithosphere), and tran 9.1 Continental Drift Wegener’s continental drift hypothesis stated that the continents had once been joined to form a single supercontinent. • (Write this information on your important points paper: 1. Wegener proposed that the supercontinent, Pangaea, began to break apart 200 million years ago and form the present landmasses.
Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. The east coast of South America and the west coast of Africa seem to fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, and Wegener discovered their rock layers "fit" just as clearly.Oct 28, 2020 · July 30 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of pioneering ocean cartographer Marie Tharp, whose seafloor maps provided evidence of continental drift. Sep 04, 2010 · For some reason my attention was directed to the Continental Drift Theory (originally theorized by Alfred Wegener). As an architect, my curiosity was raised as to what triggered the continental drift, and how the continents separated. By looking carefully at the globe, I recognized that the continents had moved in a counter-clockwise direction.
